About This Calculator

The Weight Plate Calculator turns a target barbell total into a practical plate plan for each side of the bar. It supports kilograms and pounds and reports both the achievable total and any small remainder when the target cannot be represented by the built-in common plate denominations.

Methodology

The bar weight is subtracted from the target and the remaining load is divided equally between the two sleeves. The calculator then uses the largest available common plate denomination first and continues downward until no more listed plates fit.

Disclaimer
Gyms and competitions can stock different plate sizes, and actual plates can have manufacturing tolerances. Confirm the available equipment and secure plates correctly before lifting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the plate counts for one side or both sides?

The displayed breakdown is per side, so load the same listed plates on each sleeve.

Why can there be a remainder?

Some target weights cannot be made exactly with the plate denominations included in the calculator.

Does the calculator include the bar?

Yes. Enter the actual bar weight and the calculator subtracts it before dividing the plate load between the two sides.
