About This Calculator

The Steps to Calories Calculator turns a step count into an estimated walking distance, duration and gross energy expenditure. Unlike calculators that assume one fixed number of calories per step, it uses your entered body weight, stride length and walking speed so the estimate reflects more of the factors that change walking energy cost.

Methodology

Steps are converted to distance from the entered stride length. Distance and walking speed are used to estimate duration. A walking MET value is selected from speed bands based on the 2024 Compendium of Physical Activities, and gross calories are estimated from MET × body weight in kilograms × activity time in hours.
