Estimate gross calories burned while walking from your body weight, walking speed and duration.

The result uses standardized MET values and represents a population-level estimate rather than a direct measurement from metabolic testing.

About This Calculator

The Walking Calories Calculator estimates gross energy expenditure for a walking session from body weight, speed and duration. It also reports the approximate distance covered and the standardized MET value used for the selected speed.

Methodology

Walking speed is standardized to kilometers per hour and mapped to walking MET bands from the 2024 Compendium of Physical Activities. Gross energy expenditure is estimated as MET × body weight in kilograms × duration in hours. Distance is speed multiplied by duration.

Disclaimer
MET-based calorie estimates describe average activity costs and are not direct measurements for an individual. Incline, surface, temperature, physiology and walking efficiency can materially change actual energy expenditure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does walking faster burn more calories?

For the same duration and body weight, higher walking speeds generally correspond to higher MET values and a larger estimated energy cost.

Does this show active calories or total calories?

It estimates gross activity energy using MET values, so the figure includes resting energy during the walking period rather than subtracting it.

Why may my watch show a different number?

Wearables can use heart rate, motion sensors and proprietary algorithms, while this calculator uses standardized population-level MET values.
